SPEAKER: Stephanie Johnson
Stephanie Johnson has served as President of AFTCT Local 5051 Federation of Technologists since 2011 and sits on the Executive Board as a Vice President of AFTCT. She is the chair of the state federation’s Social Justice Committee.
From 2014-2017, Stephanie also served as a Commissioner for the African American Affairs Commission for the State of Connecticut. She has been employed at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 17 years, working as a Registered Sleep Technologist.
In 2014, after returning from a successful strike and lockout, Stephanie’s union negotiated language in their contracts to hire more employees of color by way of a diversity in hiring committee. Stephanie understands that union rights and civil rights go hand in hand and that together they can level the playing field and offer opportunity to the many people of color in her community.
Stephanie joined the Poor Peoples Campaign Moral Monday witness in May of 2018. She said: "Dr. King understood that it’s the 'U' and 'I' in 'union' that makes us strong. He brought the labor and civil rights movements together in common cause. He knew joining forces was how to take on what couldn't be accomplished when we act alone.”
