SPEAKER: Tommy Murray

Tommy Murray is the co-founder, with Jackson Mittleman, of the Junior Newtown Action Alliance (JNAA).  On March 24 of this year, he was a guest speaker at the March for Our Lives in Washington, DC., representing the youth of Newtown, CT,  and was joined by the Parkland Highschool students.

While Tommy is now a junior at Newtown High School, he was a sixth-grader at the Sandy Hook Elementary school on lock-down for hours, when Adam Lanza attacked the school, killing 20 children and 6 adults. Among the victims was Murray’s former principal, Dawn Hochsprung.

“Since then, I have attended vigils,” said Murray. “I have protested in front of the gun lobby in our town. I have sent letters to Congress. I traveled to DC to meet with Congress to beg them to do something to stop gun violence. But they did nothing.”

But Tommy and Jackson Mittleman got busy and co-founded their own youth organization, Junior Newtown Action Alliance, an offshoot of Tommy’s mother Po Murray’s national organization, the Newtown Action Alliance. Student leaders say the group’s membership rose dramatically after the shooting in Parkland, Fla., in February, which has inspired student activism across the country.

The Junior Newtown Action Alliance has held town-hall style meetings with elected officials. Sen. Blumenthal, commenting about the Junior group, said he’s proud to see students in Newtown and around the country taking the initiative on starting a public dialogue about gun control. “These young people have been absolutely amazing, inspiring to so many others in their courage and determination. They’re doing more than just marching or walking out of classes.”
